Residency

The Sasso Residency program is fluid, transformative, generous, warm, open.
We want to be a meeting place for you and for other universes.
We want to be an island to create utopias or question realities. We want to be an opportunity to build new worlds, to layer, to demolish, to reshape, to be in motion – inside and outside.
We understand your artistic work and interest as the basis for processes that you initiate or drive forward in Casa Sasso. Always in discourse with yourself, your fellow residents and beyond.

With a lot of love and almost no money, we play Casa Sasso on the east side of Lake Maggiore: a beautiful, carefully restored 17th century house. The area is characterised by a mass of holiday and second homes, far from urban structures. Distractions are few and far between: a good starting point to dedicate yourself to your project. You can apply in autumn for a one-month residency in the following year, which takes place between May and October. You can find the current call for applications here.
The Sasso Residency project is organised as an association and exists since 2013. We have reviewed hundreds of applications during this time. From this experience, we know the great effort that calls for applications entail for both sides. An up-to-date portfolio, CV and website are often standard, and sometimes the project must also be explained and a motivation must be written down. This flood of information rarely simplifies the selection for the jury.
Where is the heart? How can copy-paste feelings be prevented? Encourage both sides to meet openly and curiously? With fun? The conclusion of these thoughts is reflected in our annual calls for entries: We want to move away from x-page portfolios to enriching moments of encounter during the judging process.
In 2019 we asked for a love letter or in 2020 for the greatest story of your life. In 2021, a gift to Casa Sasso. The medium could always be freely chosen. Nevertheless, the question of questions remains open for us as well: What is good art and what is art at all?
Our heart beats for low-threshold, equal opportunities and diversity. We definitely consider the conceptual boundaries of design, art and craft to be fluid transitions. The same goes for professionalism and hobby. You don’t have to call yourself an artist to apply. And you certainly don’t have to have an academic background. Let’s meet with pleasure!
